Introduction
When a communications category is set to use the Opt-Out subscription model, all persons except those that have explicitly opted out of either the category or all communications will receive items in that category if they are included in the recipient group used to send the communication.
When set to use the Opt-In model, only those that have indicated they wish to receive the item will do so as long as they are included in the recipient group for the item.
So, the Opt-Out model relies on recipients taking action to be excluded whereas the Opt-In model relies on persons taking action to be included.
Changing from Opt-In to Opt-Out
If you wish to change an existing communications category from Opt-In to Opt-Out, we recommend that you take the following steps:
- Set up a new attribute to record those people who have opted-in to that category - See the article on Bulk Setting Attributes for more information on how to do this.
- Ensure that the scope of recipient groups used in the category being changed is appropriate for the change. This might include ensuring that all those with the attribute set in the previous step are included in the group.
- Send a request to Gnosis support to have all persons Opt-In choices for that communications category cleared.
- We recommend that you then begin your next communication in the category with an invitation to recipients to Opt-Out of they do not wish to receive communications in that category.
Changing from Opt-Out to Opt-In

- Set up a new attribute to record those people who have opted-out of that category - See the article on Bulk Setting Attributes for more information on how to do this.
- Ensure that the scope of recipient groups used in the category being changed is appropriate for the change. This should include ensuring that all those with the attribute set in the previous step are excluded from the group.
- Send a request to Gnosis support to have all persons Opt-Out choices for that communications category cleared.
- You will then generally need to send a one-time invitation to persons that you wish to opt-in to the new communications group. This invitation should have a link to the communications opt-in/out management page on the portal and will need to be sent from a general communications category that is set to opt-out otherwise no-one will receive the communication as no-one has yet opted-in.
